The Center brings distinguished visitors to Yale
to remain in residence from two weeks to one year, depending on
the project and circumstances. Visitors have an office at the Center,
allowing them to utilize the resources available there in addition
to making full use of the University’s ample resources. Visitors
are encouraged to become active members of the Yale community and
to interact with faculty, students and other scholars in residence.
Distinguished Visiting Fellow, 2005
Jonathan Schell
Jonathan Schell is the Center’s Distinguished
Visiting Fellow for the year 2005. He is one of the most perceptive
writers of this day on issues of international peace and security.
During his Fellowship with the YCSG he will write
a book that presents the current threat of nuclear proliferation
and terrorist use of nuclear weapons in the larger context of the
development of nuclear weaponry and strategy since their beginning
in 1945, and will make suggestions for future policy. The essay
will analyze the current war on terror in the light of the larger
and more enduring dilemmas of the nuclear age – the evolution
of the nuclear "balance
of terror," the quest for nuclear arms control and disarmament,
the long arc of proliferation. Other weapons of mass destruction
will also be discussed.
